Mar. 27--Many countries have stockpiled large quantities of Tamiflu, the main anti-viral drug for bird flu, but the United States has ordered much less and won't decide until summer whether to buy more.
Scientists are rushing to develop a vaccine for avian influenza, but it could be several months before it is ready for the public. Tamiflu, a prescription drug, will be called upon first if the disease expands around the globe anytime soon.
"Anti-viral drugs are going to be our first line of defense," said Dr. Arnold Monto, a flu expert at the University of Michigan.
England has ordered 14.6 million doses and France 13 million, enough for at least 20 percent of their residents. The United States spent $87 million to purchase 2.3 million doses, which would cover less than 1 percent of the population.
