In an important milestone for the sea-based missile defense program, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) yesterday reported the successful midcourse intercept of a target missile in a test over the Pacific Ocean.
The guided missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG-70) fired a Raytheon [RTN]- developed Standard Missile-3 interceptor, which hit a target rocket fired from the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii.
"It was successful," an MDA official said. "It [the SM-3] intercepted and destroyed the target."
As part of the administration's plan to create a limited initial missile defense capability, the Navy and MDA are developing the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system, a program overseen by prime contractor Lockheed Martin [LMT]. By year's end, 18 Aegis ships are supposed to convert to a ballistic missile defense configuration.
