The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) yesterday said it deployed two walk through explosives trace detection machines for passenger screening at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, marking the first U.S. deployment of multiple portals.
The newly installed portals are the Sentinel II machines supplied by Smiths Detection, a division of Britain's Smiths Group. Smiths and General Electric [GE] are the only two companies that have supplied trace portal machines to TSA as part of ongoing pilot programs to test how well the machines work and what their impacts are on airport operations.
TSA said that by testing two portals it will be able to evaluate electrical power distribution and other logistical issues while collecting data on security and customer service impacts.
McCarran marks the ninth airport with the trace portals deployed. Both Smiths and GE have each supplied five of their systems, with Smiths selling theirs to TSA and GE loaning them. TSA plans on ...
