Mar. 26--When the Citigroup Foundation gives, it often gives big.
In 2003, among the more than $55 million paid out, the foundation had more than 100 grants of $100,000 or more, with two dozen totaling $250,000 or more, according to its federal tax filing.
The foundation's largest single grant that year, $1.15 million, went to the National Academy Foundation for general operating support. Citigroup director George David, the chief executive at United Technologies Corp., is a board member of the National Academy Foundation, which works with high schools and business to develop career-themed academies.
Citigroup considers David to be an independent director. Its governance guidelines say that when determining independence, its board of directors gives "special consideration" to grants that exceed the greater of $250,000 or 10 percent of a group's consolidated gross revenue.
