* Antoine de Saint-Exupery remains an attractive figure to contemplate, and the mystery of his death 60 years ago has now been cleared up. On July 31, 1944, he took off from Corsica in a Lockheed twin-engined P-38 to scout German forces in the Rhone Valley. He disappeared, age 44. A hero of early aviation and a pioneer of airmail service during the 1920s, he was something of a French Lindbergh. He was famous for The Little Prince, but unlike Lindbergh he wrote lyrically of aviation, as in Night Flight. According to A. Scott Berg's excellent biography of Lindbergh, ...
