* The president's council on bioethics, aka the Kass council, is again being criticized--but this time, by social conservatives. The council has recently come out for two reforms. It has asked Congress to set an age limit on research conducted on human embryos, so that research that destroys embryos older than, say, 14 days will be illegal. It also suggested that Congress make illegal the cloning of a human embryo with the intent of implanting it in a woman's womb. The Catholic bishops and Focus on the Family both condemned the proposals. The age limit, in these organizations' view, amounts to implicit approval of research that destroys the youngest human embryos.
