* Harvard released a transcript of Lawrence Summers's controversial comments on the dearth of female scientists on the faculties of top universities. The transcript adds some important details to the story, but mostly it confirms what we already knew. Summers was suggesting that discrimination by universities such as his was not the only or even the biggest reason for the low number of female scientists there. The fact that women do most of the work of raising children, he said, is also a factor that keeps them from being able to put in the necessary hours to succeed in the top science jobs. Perhaps that fact reflects some sort of social failure, but it isn't the universities' fault. Summers also mentioned that "issues of intrinsic aptitude, and particularly of the variability of aptitude," could play a role.
