Dear Mr. Buckley: While taking a practice Graduate Record Examination through Princeton Review, I came across the following fill-in-the-blank, which I think you might enjoy: "In effect, Buckley's use of such pompous language, rather than adding to the force of his arguments, merely makes one suspect that behind the [blank] verbal facade stands a flimsy supporting architecture." Answer choices: (A) impressive, (B) brisk, (C) embellished, (D) crumbling, (E) slouching. The decision here between A and C is challenging. I picked A and got it wrong. Is my academic career over?
Best regards,

Dear Mr. Truxes: I'd have thought D would have revealed inside knowledge!

* Dear Mr. Buckley: In the Oct. 13 issue of NR, you responded to a letter of mine in which I described a problem I was having in deciding upon a list of five dinner guests, the difficulty arising from the condition that each would accept the invitation. I was (and am still) having difficulty with the final three choices, as I have been settled on my wife and you being the first two.
