* Are we alone in thinking that one of the most wearily depressing minor features of our current national life is the 20-year effort to purge all references to Indian tribes and their martial qualities from the names of college and professional sports teams? Here it comes again. We hear that the University of Iowa has cancelled a baseball game against Bradley University in nearby Peoria, Ill. Directors of the Iowa athletic program realized, surely a bit late in the day, that Bradley's team is nicknamed the Braves--so playing them would violate a 1994 university policy against any non-conference dealings with teams displaying Indian names or mascots.
