Ramesh Ponnuru, as always, is right on the money when it comes to Bush hatred on the left ("Why They Hate Him," May 17). Elitist disdain accounts for a lot of it, as does a penchant for conspiracy theories. But what about the dramatic erosion of confidence in Bush on the right? Recently, I attended a not-so-happy happy hour with a gaggle of young conservatives. I was struck by the fact that, with few exceptions, those gathered had lost all confidence in President Bush, and many were even considering a vote for the Boston Fog Machine--not because they felt excluded, or because they saw themselves as too intelligent or sophisticated to root for the Red State Rube (they'd been doing it for years), but because they felt palpably betrayed.
There were, of course, the partisans of very small government, who've been enraged for some time now, but they were outnumbered by the pragmatists who accept that a governing party has to govern. The ...
