RAYNAL: This car is such a huge improvement over the Cavalier that it's hard to know where to begin with the kudos. First, it's good-looking. Second, the Ecotec four-cylinder is strong and sounds throaty. The gearbox is smooth, though I'd also like to try the manual. The steering is miles ahead of the old J-body's. The ride and handling mix is quite good: Where Cavalier crashed and bumped over road imperfections, the Cobalt smooths it out with no drama. This Opel Astra-based platform works.
Overall, this could get my Most Improved Car award. It is nearly as good as Honda's Civic-it's right on its bumper. Trouble with that is there will be a new Civic soon.
