Roy Weatherby read an article in a 1945 issue of Sports Afield about bullet speed that he didn't agree with, so he wrote a rebuttal letter to the magazine about his experience with velocity. His letter was printed in a subsequent issue. Weatherby began receiving letters from readers wanting magnum rifles and ammunition that offered the velocity that he championed, and Weatherby's Inc. was soon founded. Roy first began building magnum rifles in his garage and eventually quit his job as an insurance salesman. Weatherby's first developed round was the .220 Weatherby Rocket.
