LexisNexis Butterworths is a "single source", updated version of the old Butterworths Direct suite of online products. Its advertising features a smiling lawyer who says he had 30 minutes to find recent cases on freedom of expression, and found them in five.
LexisNexis claims its new service gives legal practitioners a "single point of access to a vast range of authoritative legal content, including cases, legislation and commentary from more than 130 trusted sources".
Your first impression when logged on is that of a busy page containing a mass of information. The home page offers two search options. You can either search for a specific document through the content types: cases, legislation or commentary. Or you can browse the content types.
While cases and legislation are self-explanatory, "commentary" is a range of handbooks and text books typically from legal publisher Butterworths, but it is not an exhaustive list of legal commentary. The second search alternative is that of a general search through the different content types, using Boolean searching.
IWR put LexisNexis through its paces with the help of a lawyer. We began by trying to find a specific document, the case of Clark vs Nomura, which is a well-known case to do with payment of discretionary bonuses, but when we typed in both "clark nomura" and "clark vs nomura" we drew a blank. A Google search of "clark vs nomura" pulled up the case we were looking for as the first result.
When "clark AND nomura" was requested in the general document search the case was displayed straight away - the power of Boolean search. The results displayed the case name and citation, the court or tribunal, judgement date and source, automatically sorted by relevance.
We tried some other searches. Not surprisingly, some were more successful than others. A general search on "working time regulations" across cases, legislation and commentary drew a blank, but a more general search on "working time regulations AND holiday pay" delivered 156 results.
