The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) has converted paper documentation that was taking up 30km of shelf space to electronic files in just three weekends. TRL provides land transport research, advice and solutions. It implemented Open Text's Livelink document management system after first shredding 125 tons of paper and 15 tons of confidential material.
The move was sparked by the TRL's relocation to a new building, but Kevin Miles, head of knowledge management at TRL, said the organisation was long overdue for an overhaul of its records management.
"The information environment was in complete disarray," said Miles. "It was left for people to do what they wanted with any correspondence, for example. I saw it as a big opportunity to get some structure and business discipline where it had been lacking."
