AW: How do you interpret all the drama within Fiat Auto, including your new assignment?
Stephenson: They're very serious in Turin about putting all of Fiat Auto back on track, and they're especially serious about Fiat. No one ever wants to leave Ferrari, but when the call comes from Mr. di Montezemolo and I'm asked to help out, I take it as a good move.
AW: A lot of people would see this as a demotion. Do you?
Stephenson: I really don't. Fiat is everything that's at the heart of the Italian people. Ferrari is heaven and Fiat is down to earth. It may take more work to sell a million Fiats. If you get it wrong, it's really wrong. Get it right and you could help save a company.
AW: Will you have any sort of executive leverage for design approvals?
Stephenson: I have a meeting pretty soon and these days when you have a meeting, the decision is made then and there. I'll know soon, but in the new corporate ...
