IRL switching to ethanol
In a move certain to put the pressure on NASCAR, the IRL confirmed its decision to use a fuel made of grain beginning in 2006. Ethanol, a renewable and biodegradable fuel, will be used as a 10 percent mixture with methanol next season, and used exclusively in 2007. The switch to ethanol is not expected to change a car's sound, smell or performance. Ethanol has not been used in Indy car racing, though another grain-based fuel, known as ethyl, powered the car of Leon Duray at Indy in 1927.
