Byline: CURT CAVIN
There was much to look at in the first Indy car season opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway. But most of the field was looking at the back of Dan Wheldon's blazingly fast car.
Of course, no one should be surprised by Wheldon's domination of the Toyota Indy 300. Tony Kanaan hadn't so much as wrapped up last year's IRL championship when he offered his pick for the 2005 season. Kanaan said his little British buddy should and would be the man to beat this season.
No arguments now.
Wheldon won by 3.69 seconds, and he could have blitzed the field by more had an eight-car pileup not slowed the 200-lap race for 17 circuits beginning on lap 159. When the restart came, Wheldon drove away from some of the best in the sport, including two-time IRL champ Sam Hornish Jr., two-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, Kanaan, and rising star Vitor Meira (yes, another talented Brazilian).
"See what I mean?'' joked Kanaan, who obviously didn't need to remind folks of Wheldon's strength in 2004.
Wheldon tied Kanaan, Indy winner Buddy Rice and Adrian Fernandez with three wins last season, and he won Honda's first race at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan. He also was the last man left to battle Kanaan, his teammate at Andretti Green Racing, for the championship.
