Bye-bye, McLaren; hello, Koenigsegg
The McLaren F1's reign as the world's fastest series production car officially ended Feb. 28 when a standard Koenigsegg CCR maintained an average speed of 241.01 mph over the 7.77-mile banked Nardo test track in Italy. A slightly modified McLaren F1 hit 240.3 mph in a straight line at the Ehra proving ground in Germany in 1993.
Audi not at rest
Audi's upcoming Q7 offroader could spawn a new hybrid to take on Lexus' recently launched RX400h. In Geneva, Audi chairman Martin Winterkorn said Ingolstadt is developing various hybrid systems, including both gasoline/electric and diesel/electric versions. Winterkorn also confirmed Audi is working on a smaller Q5 off-roader to take on the BMW X3.
BMW will expand lineup
BMW is working on both a luxury MPV and a sporty crossover inspired by the X-Coupe concept shown in Detroit in 2001. Both are set for U.S. introductions by the end of 2008.
The MPV would be built in Germany and the crossover at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant. The vehicles will share engines, gearboxes, electrics and other parts.
