SURPRISE, Ariz. _ Getting traded from the A's to the Kansas City Royals was a jolt for Mark Teahen, though he knew deep down it was best for him.

Playing third base in the A's organization is not a sound plan for advancing to the majors, at least as long as a guy named Eric Chavez is around.

"It was either buy a house in Sacramento or get traded," said Teahen, a former St. Mary's College standout.

Teahen and pitcher Mike Wood were dealt to Kansas City as part of a three-team deal that netted Oakland closer Octavio Dotel from Houston last June.
