The S&P 500 dropped 0.5% Tuesday and the Dow industrials slipped 0.2%. Trading grew modestly.

Texas Instruments slid 1.03 to 26.34 in double average volume. Late Monday, the chipmaker lowered its first-quarter sales target and cut its earnings forecast to a range of 22 cents to 24 cents per share, down from its earlier range of 22 cents to 26 cents. The company blamed a glut of chips used in flat-screen and high-definition televisions.
