The Courier of Texas reported January 19 that Ricky Otis, a homebuilder from New Caney, surprised two thieves at a construction site, wounding one and scaring the other away.
Because he was fed up with repeated thefts at his construction site, Otis decided to spend the night of Monday, January 17 in his partially finished house. At 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday, he heard a downstairs door being forced open, so he called the police and went downstairs to investigate.
He found that a van had been backed up in the driveway and that two men were loading the van with building materials. When Otis surprised the men, one of the two reached into the van. Believing that the thief was reaching for a weapon, Otis shot the man with his shotgun, hitting him in the head and back. The other thief ran away.
The unidentified wounded man was brought to a local hospital where he was listed in serious condition. The thief who fled was ...
