Byline: NANCY GONDO
When Grete Waitz ran the New York City Marathon in 1978, she'd never run more than 12 miles at a stretch.
The Norwegian planned to hang up her already successful track and field career after this race.
She took off at the starting gun and maintained a steady pace. But by mile 19, she didn't feel too well.
Her legs were cramping, and it was tough trying to drink water while running. Instead she sucked on oranges for sustenance to make it across the finish line.
Amazingly, Waitz won the women's race. She also set a world record with her time of 2:32:30.
Though she made it look easy, it wasn't. When asked if she'd run again, she replied: "Another marathon? I don't think I feel like running another one, ever!"
