Byline: SEAN HIGGINS
The battle over President Bush's push to add personal accounts to Social Security has gotten pretty rough. Just ask supporter Rep. Jim McCrery, R-La.
Last month ads began to appear on TV and newspapers in his area accusing him of doing the bidding of banks and Wall Street.
McCrery, who chairs a House panel on Social Security, denounced the ads in a defiant statement Wednesday.
"I will continue to fight back against those who are focused on thwarting the effort to secure Social Security's future for generations to come," he said.
Such attacks are part of a broader effort by liberal groups to hobble Bush's Social Security plans. Efforts range from broad-based advertising campaigns to attacks on potentially vulnerable lawmakers.
And they seem to be working.
