2005 Saturn Relay
Date in fleet: Feb. 2-9 As-tested price: $29,295 Powertrain: 3.5-liter V6; fwd, four-speed automatic Output: 200 hp @ 5200 rpm, 220 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm Curb weight: 4331 lbs
RAYNAL: I'm all for versatile, six-, seven- or eight-passenger non-SUVs for hauling people and stuff, the smaller and lighter the better. And the closer they get to 20 mpg around town, the more I like 'em. I'm particularly interested in the European-spec Honda FR-V, a small wagonette I wish Honda would sell here.
Saturn needed a minivan in its lineup; we've heard over the years that dealers were clamoring for one. But is this the answer: An old-tech Chevy Venture with a platypus beak? Hmm.
It has most of the amenities that minivan people need-power doors, DVD, cupholders-and the 3.5-liter six is powerful enough. One complaint I have is that this engine is not nearly as refined as you find in Honda's Odyssey, Toyota's Sienna or even Mazda's MPV-all of which are within the Saturn's competitive set. The transmission is a smooth four-speed automatic, where some of the competition now offers five-speeds. The build quality inside is okay.
Perhaps Saturn's gushing dealer experience will get some customers in Relays. For Saturn's sake I hope so.
ROCA: Now that the Relay is here, it makes you wonder what took 'em so long. After all, Saturn does position itself as a family-friendly company. There is one thing I like about the Relay: the dusty black door panels. They hide dirt well, and that is the scourge of all minivan owners. Beyond that, I find the vehicle objectionable in most every way: The driver's seat is uncomfortable; the turning radius semi-trucklike; it feels underpowered; the "wood'' trim is made of petroleum products. Even try honking the horn and you press a bunch of dead space before a weak bleat calls out.
