There is a saying in NASCAR: The Nextel Cup schedule may open with the Daytona 500, but the real season doesn't start until the following week. That's when the restrictor plates are removed, the glamour of NASCAR's biggest event fades into the background, and competitors get down to the weekly business of racing.
This year the second event on the schedule was moved from Rockingham to California Speedway at Fontana, where a laundry list of new NASCAR rules, policies and procedures was awaiting the teams and drivers.
