Mar. 2--Wachovia Corp. said Tuesday it will close its branch at Akers Center in Gastonia this summer as the company moves ahead with its merger with SouthTrust Corp.

The branch, at 1301 E. Franklin Blvd., is one of 174 Wachovia and SouthTrust locations across the Southeast that will close in June.

The Akers Center location was targeted for closure because there are several Wachovia and SouthTrust branches near and along Franklin Boulevard, said Wachovia spokeswoman Ferris Morrison.

Customer accounts will be transferred from the Akers Center location to what's now the SouthTrust branch at 750 S. New Hope Road, said Mary…
