BJ's Q4 profit up 12.3% ex items

The wholesale club earned 73 cents a share, 2 cents over views and 7 cents over the year-ago profit. Sales rose 7% to $2.05 bil, just missing views of $2.09 bil. BJ's Wholesale Club's same-store sales rose 3.4%, helped by a 1.2% rise in same-store gas sales. The No. 3 warehouse club operator forecast 25-27 cents a share for Q1 and $1.85-$1.93 for '05, vs. views of 25 cents and $1.86. Shares rose 8.5% to 33.20. See story on A7

** United Natural Foods earned 23 cents a share ex items, rising 27.8% over the year-ago profit but missing views by a penny. Sales rose 28% to $504.7 mil. Shares fell 4% to 29.90.
