The American public has been extraordinarily generous in its support of biomedical research. This generosity rests on the expectation that deeper insights into the mechanisms of health and disease will yield safer, more effective treatments and cures, individuals participate in research studies because they trust in the integrity of research organizations and their commitment to the welfare of human research participants.
