Mar. 2--Supachai Panitchpakdi has been nominated to take up the position of secretary-general of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad).
Kofi Annan, the United Nations secretary-general, announced the nomination for the four-year position yesterday.
Mr Annan praised Dr Supachai's work as the World Trade Organisation director-general, especially when he oversaw the Doha round of treaty talks -- named after the Qatari capital where it was launched in 2001 -- that aimed to slash subsidies, tariffs and other barriers to global commerce.
