Mar. 1--USING PHONE MAY BE BEST CALL TO GET FREE CREDIT REPORT: Today is the day consumers in Michigan and 11 other Midwest states can finally go out and get their credit reports for free. Forget about paying $10 or more for each report.
Now, the big question is: Do you ask by phone or computer?
Some consumer groups are saying: "Call Don't Click." Using a phone could be simpler and smarter than going through the Internet.
"The least confusing way of doing this is by calling," said Pam Dixon, executive director for the World Privacy Forum, a nonprofit group that conducts consumer education.
Free credit reports are rolling out nationwide this year, as part of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act signed into law by President George W. Bush last year.
