Politics: Liberal activists who paint President Bush as a "divider, not a uniter" must be pulling out their hair as White House policy and personnel moves begin to chip away at traditional Democratic voting blocs.

Bush's recent overtures to minority groups and diverse Cabinet picks, not to mention his re-election results, seem to be netting real gains among blacks as well as Latinos, women and Jews. It's enough to give the Democrats a nasty bit of race envy. All they have left is their base, and Republicans are actually starting to cut into it. Witness the results of the presidential race:

** Bush improved on his 2000 margin of support among African Americans, attracting 530,000 more black votes.

** He also attracted almost half the Hispanic vote -- a 9% improvement over 2000 and a factor in his sweep of the Southwest.

** At the same time, Bush garnered 6% more of the Jewish vote, helping him sew up hotly contested Florida on time.

** And though he lost the female vote to Kerry (51% to 48%), it was still an improvement over 2000 (by 5 percentage points).

Ouch!
