As the tech industry looks for new sources of growth, XML is in view.

XML, or extensible markup language, translates data among different computer systems and software types.

That comes in handy for businesses and government that send much data. But XML requires a lot of a computer's processing power, and it has security issues.

Those problems have spawned a number of startups that make hardware and software products designed to speed up and secure XML data. XML gear sales, small now, are expected to grow as larger companies get involved.

The XML gear market "is absolutely, positively coming," said Mike Tyrrell, a partner at venture firm Venrock Associates. Venrock has invested in XML startup DataPower.

XML got a push recently from the Internal Revenue Service. In January, the agency said large companies would have to file their tax returns using XML, starting with their 2005 returns.
