Abstract

Another Poverty: About the Poverty of Women

This study investigates the role of women in terms of the survival and reproduction of the family life under extreme poverty. It takes a group of women, who migrated to Ankara with their families from rural areas, as its object, and first defines their poverty. The study is based on in-depth individual and focus group interviews with, and observations of the group of about 50 women, who attended Functional Adult Literacy Programs (FALP) developed by the Mother Child Education Foundation (ACEV). FALP is offered in a social center, in Safaktepe which is a poverty stricken district in close proximity to downtown Ankara. The study evaluates various aspects of women's daily life under poverty, such as expectations and dreams of women for the future of the family and children on which their desire to live depends on relationships among family members, mutual support relations for survival among poor families, influence of accessible welfare programs, violence in the family and women's struggle against violence, employment opportunities and wages. It also documents unusual strategies and practices developed for their survival. The study concludes that under poverty women suffer the most in poor families due to their illiteracy, their intermittent employment in substandart conditions, and their assumed responsibilities in family life. It also points to the lack of state policies and social programs to alleviate the poverty and the urgent need for the development of effective poverty prevention programs.
