James Winkleman of Eugene, Oregon, confronted an assailant and ended up shooting him after being told that the man was raping a woman who was screaming for help.
According to the January 14 Register-Guard, Winkleman, who carries a gun whenever he leaves the house because a series of violent car accidents have enfeebled him, was walking a family dog when the incident occurred. His 13-year-old daughter ran up to him hysterical and told him that a man with long red hair was raping a woman and that she was screaming for someone to call the police. The daughter also said that she saw the man run into a house.
After sending his daughter with a neighbor to call the police, Winkleman went to the outside of the house that the man had gone into. At the house, Winkleman saw someone peering out a window. Winkleman shouted to the man and told him to wait inside the house because the police were coming.
A few moments later, Winkleman saw the man trying to leave through the backyard, so he rushed over to stop him from leaving. Winkleman told the Register-Guard, "I told him, 'My ...
