Feb. 21--Would-be entrepreneurs can take heart from the story of the folks behind Mountain Khakis. Even in the ultracompetitive retail world, not all the good ideas have already been taken.

About 18 months ago, Charlotteans Mac Lackey and Ross Saldarini were between projects. They had started and sold a series of companies, including InTouch Interactive, a custom software and Internet design company, and Internetsoccer.com, a large portal of soccer-related content. Lackey had just resigned his post as CEO of Ettain Group, and he and business partner Saldarini were looking for a startup company to invest in.
