GRITZINGER: It is my wish that everyone who pans the workaday appearance of Ford's twins, the Five Hundred and this Montego, gets a chance to appreciate them when the going gets tough. This Montego performed like a champion-a champion sled dog mushing its way through the slush and snow clogging my artery to work. With its all-wheel drive, reasonable and predictable V6 power, and smooth application thereof via the CVT, I could have kept driving this car until the snow turned to sunshine. I've driven many a front-driver, rear-driver and 4wd/awd SUV that didn't punch through the in-between-lanes snow piles with the ease and lack of drama I found in the Montego.

PAVIA-RAUCHMAN: I think this is a good-looking sedan. Nothing too fancy: not overly rounded like the Lincoln Town Car; not squared-off, as seems to be a major styling cue for sedans today. And it is really roomy inside, roomy enough to ...
