Here's why the Speed World Challenge matters: It features professional road racing with real cars, or reasonable facsimiles thereof. Yes, they are professionally prepared; no, they are not quite showroom stock. But they more closely resemble real automobiles that you can buy than the tube-framed funny cars now passed off as stock cars in other series. That is the appeal, and it appears to be growing.
There are two categories: For the high-powered beasts there is GT, in which Tommy Archer won the season title last year with a Viper. Smaller sedans race in Touring Car, where Bill Auberlen is the reigning champ in a BMW 325i.
Manufacturers are starting to see the relevance of racing with real cars. Last season Cadillac launched a two-car World Challenge GT effort with CTS-Vs prepared by Pratt & Miller. The program continues this year, with Andy Pilgrim in one car and Max Papis replacing Max Angelelli in the other.
