For the first time since the Indy Racing League debuted the Menards Infiniti Pro Series in 2002, the season champion did not graduate to the Indy car series. Thiago Medeiros, who won six races and eight poles in 12 races in 2004, did not have a ride at AutoWeek's deadline. He lacks a major sponsorship package to offer a team.
Previously moving up were A.J. Foyt IV (2002 Pro Series champion), Mark Taylor (2003 champion) and Pro Series veterans Jeff Simmons and Ed Carpenter. Moving up this year will be 2004 series runner-up Paul Dana. P.J. Chesson, the sprint-car driver who stepped into the Pro Series last season and won three consecutive races, remains on the sidelines.
It is unclear if the Pro Series has a car-count problem. Only six showed up for last month's test at Homestead, though IRL president Brian Barnhart said 12 to 14 cars would attend this month's session at Phoenix. The 14-race season begins March 6 at Homestead.
Bottom line: There will be many new faces in 2005.
