Readers, like so many others, were stunned by the sudden ferocity and destruction of the tsunami. Many praised our Jan. 10 cover in particular: "It's a most meaningful image; it depicted hope," wrote one. Another singled out our two-page graphic as "the finest I've ever seen in NEWSWEEK."

My Jan. 10 "After The Tsunami" issue arrived yesterday, and my eyes could not leave the cover. This photograph, more than any other image I've seen, had a huge impact on me. This sweet child, hardly out of babyhood, looking dazed and lost in her own thoughts, not understanding the monster that took her childhood innocence. ...
