Feb. 15--A lot is on the line for pharmaceutical companies, doctors and arthritis patients when a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel convenes Wednesday.
Over three days, experts will delve into the risks and benefits of widely used painkillers that have come under scrutiny.
The meeting should provide a step toward clarity after the mass confusion sparked by the withdrawal of Vioxx. Merck & Co. Inc. withdrew the pill from the market Sept. 30 because it was linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Since then, other studies have led to conflicting information about the cardiovascular safety of two other drugs in Vioxx's class -- Celebrex and Bextra -- and the drug naproxen, which is sold over the counter as Aleve.
