Feb. 13--Nancy Cornett can't quite put a finger on what's missing in her neighborhood, but she knows something has up and fled.
It slowly disappeared sometime between 1972, when the intersection of Bells Ferry Road and Ga. 92 in southern Cherokee county was controlled by a four-way stop sign, and 1993, when Towne Lake, a massive complex of homes and strip centers, was built about two miles north.
The Bells Ferry Road intersection was one of the first developed in the county, drawing shopping centers, stores and restaurants. It thrived, grew, then receded. Today, too many of the storefronts are empty or filled with second-tier shops like thrift stores.
