The Dow climbed 0.8% Thursday and the S&P 500 0.4% as volume edged slightly higher.

Oil and gas stocks benefited as the International Energy Agency raised its view for global demand. Crude closed $1.64 higher at $47.10.

Varco International gushed 1.29 to close at 32.94 in double normal trade. Wednesday the Houston-based service provider and maker of drilling gear reported fourth-quarter results. It earned 41 cents per share, up 105%, First Call said. Sales rose 27%. Varco credited rising levels of capital spending in the oil industry.

Newfield Exploration rocketed 5.92, or 9%, closing at 70.09 in the heaviest day …
