Internationalists, especially Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) members, have long sought to transform the United Nations into a world government with the power to force all nations, including the United States, to abide by its dictates.
"The United Nations represents not a final stage in the development of world order, but only a primitive stage. Therefore its primary task is to create the conditions which will make possible a more highly developed organization."
John Foster Dulles (CFR) in War and Peace, 1950. Dulles participated in the San Francisco Conference that founded the United Nations and served as secretary of state in the Eisenhower administration.
"A world effectively controlled by the United Nations is one in which 'world government' would come about through the establishment of supranational institutions, characterized by mandatory universal membership and some ability to employ physical force. Effective control would thus entail a preponderance of political power in the hands of a supranational organization.... " Lincoln P. Standing in the way of "a world effectively controlled by the United Nations" are the American people, who would strongly oppose any overt attempt to submerge their country in a world government. Pragmatic internationalists therefore recognize that they must proceed slowly, stealthily, and on various fronts--not just through the UN but through other regional and global arrangements.
