Byline: CURT CAVIN
There was plenty of racing to chew on last weekend at the 28th Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway, regardless of taste buds. Though primarily an event for the United States Auto Club and NASCAR's regional cars, the Copper World drew stars from NASCAR, the IRL, Champ Car and the World of Outlaws, just to name a few.
First things first. The winners:
J.J. Yeley won the USAC Midget race with what was officially recorded as a last-lap pass of his teammate Bobby East. Specifically, the pass came in the final few feet as East got trapped behind a pair of lapped cars pedaling down the middle of the road.
East, last year's national Midget champion, was furious. Yeley felt bad, but he accepted his second straight win in the event as any driver would.
"Bobby decided he had to lift and go high [to pass the cars], I decided to go low,'' Yeley said. "That's a driver breakdown rather than an equipment breakdown, so I'll enjoy that trophy in my trophy case.''
Dave Steele, who won last year's USAC Silver Crown title by leading the first 240 laps of the season, led all 101 laps Sunday and held off Tracy Hines, Tyler Walker and Yeley at the finish.
