Feb. 7--With demand for consumer electronics such as Apple iPods skyrocketing, an acute shortage of one-inch hard disk drives (HDD) has hit the global marketplace.
The shortage comes as HDD manufacturers, caught off-guard by the switch in the market trend, had prioritised their production to 3.5-inch drives, more suited to larger products such as computers. Currently, only a handful of companies including Hitachi, Seagate, Magicstar and Cornice have the advanced technology to produce the 1.0-inch HDD units needed for many of the new consumer electronic innovations.
