Feb. 4--A temporary duty-free zone will be declared for the six tsunami-hit southern provinces under a joint programme undertaken by the Customs Department and the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Sathit Limpongpan, the customs director-general, said the initiative was aimed at supporting efforts to revive tourism in Phuket, Phangnga, Krabi, Trang, Satun and Ranong.

Since the Dec 26 tsunami, hotel occupancy rates in the area have fallen sharply to around 10 percent in the affected provinces, compounding the economic damage felt from the disaster due to the loss of tourist revenues right at the height of the travel ...
