Feb. 3--The chairman of a key legislative committee has called a hearing for next week so Minnesota Department of Health officials can explain why they investigate only a fraction of the complaints filed about nursing homes.

The scheduled hearing is the first response by lawmakers to a Pioneer Press report last week on nursing home care. Nearly 4,000 people have died in Minnesota nursing homes over the past 15 years from causes that some experts and advocates say are often avoidable, including dehydration and pressure sores.
