Feb. 1--Battling test-day jitters Special attention helps students succeed
The classroom work that Iris Cornelius does with a small group of fourth-graders covers more than reading and vocabulary.
When she meets with the students at St. Paul's Ames Elementary school once a week, she's also trying to teach them ways to decrease their anxiety and increase their confidence, in part to help them prepare for standardized tests.
"Sometimes kids are anxious and can't bring all their skills to bear," said Cornelius, a child psychologist who has been doing such consulting work for Dolores Henderson, the principal at Ames, for many years.
About 70,000 Minnesota eighth-graders will take the Basic Skills reading test today, just one of the standardized tests that students throughout the state face in coming weeks.…
