Medical bills cause bankruptcies
A Harvard Medical School survey of 931 personal bankruptcies in five states found half cited medical causes for the filing, even though over 75% had insurance when their illness started. Researchers estimated 1.9 mil-2.2 mil Americans experience medical bankruptcy, if filers plus their dependents are included. Insured filers spend an average $13,460 on co-payments, deductibles and other uncovered services, while those without insurance spent an average of $10,893, said the study in the journal Health Affairs.
