CVS lifts outlook as sales surge
The No. 2 drugstore chain earned 56 cents a share ex items in Q4, down 13% but a penny over views. Sales climbed 20% to $8.92 bil, boosted by the addition of 1,268 Eckerd stores and other units. Same-store sales rose 4.4%. CVS forecast '05 profit of $2.62-$2.68 a share vs. views of $2.63. Shares closed up 3.5% to 48.26.
Wal-Mart wins overtime appeal
A federal appeals court overturned a '99 ruling that found the giant retailer failed to pay its pharmacy workers up to $140 mil in overtime. The pharmacists sued Wal-Mart claiming their salary and hours were adjusted so often that they were actually hourly employees eligible for overtime pay. Wal-Mart said changes didn't violate U.S. labor laws. Shares rose 1% to 53.06.
** Haggar plunged 15.5% to 18.78 after the clothing maker lowered its Q1 outlook from a 21-26 cents a share loss to a 45 cents a share loss, against views of a 23 cent loss.
